Sarah, How come the Cincinnati Pattys didn't know you were such accomplished athletes? Awesome contribution. Your words reminded me of the pre swim season when we had to run for conditioning. I HATE RUNNING! My fastest run is slower than a power walker in a 5K run. I learned quickly that it is mind over matter which I had difficulty convincing myself to go on around the track one more time or up the stadium steps again when I couldn't feel my legs after the last rep. Some how my arms seemed better able to handle the strain of pulling my body through the water than my legs were able to hold up propelling my body around a track or down the side walk. It takes a certain kind of person to jump over a hurdle or rack up the miles training for the next race. I am not that kind of person. I hear the endorphins are addictive. Well I've kicked the habit of raising my heart rate for extended periods and living in chlorine for hours a day. My body and health would be better if I'd continued swimming or walking in 5K races just for fun but I haven't.
Thanks for bringing back the physical memories that I'd just as soon forget. It was interesting to learn in high school just how far one could push your body and endurance and be able to recover and do it again for the next race or the next day at practice. I was shocked to learn how much I could sweat and still be able to finish a practice. I was grateful when the first week of pre season conditioning practice was over and the four flights of steps up to the lunchroom no longer threatened to make my muscles drain out of my legs. It was mind over matter and I was a better person for the experiences and the friendships made.

What an incredible tale! It is so hard to imagine people doing these kinds of things, yet the world is full of them - regardless of the coat, costume, uniform, frock, or persona they might put on.
